Can You Use Vinegar on Hardwood Floors?

No. Vinegar is acidic, and polyurethane finishes do not tolerate acid well over time. A single mopping will not destroy your floor, but regular use dulls the finish, etches it at a microscopic level, and shortens the time until the floor needs recoating.

That is the short answer, and it is worth explaining because vinegar advice is everywhere and the reasoning behind it usually is not.

What Vinegar Actually Does to a Finish

Nearly every hardwood floor installed in the last forty years is protected by a film of polyurethane sitting on top of the wood. That film is what you walk on. It is what makes the floor shiny, and it is what keeps water and dirt out of the wood.

White vinegar is roughly pH 2.5, while polyurethane is designed for a neutral pH environment. Repeated exposure to acid etches the surface, not visibly at first, but the floor stops reflecting light cleanly and starts looking flat, especially in the traffic lanes where cleaning happens most. That same exposure softens the film, so a softened finish scratches more easily and grit that would have skated across an intact finish leaves a mark instead. And because vinegar mopped on gets into the gaps between boards, where there is no finish protecting anything, it eventually reaches the wood itself, which on older floors shows up as darkened seams.

Add the fact that most vinegar mopping is done with a soaked string or sponge mop, and you have the two things that damage hardwood most happening in the same operation: acid and standing water.

Why the Advice Persists

The advice persists for reasons that make sense on their own terms. Vinegar cuts grease and evaporates without leaving residue, so the floor genuinely does look clean right after mopping; the damage is cumulative and slow, which makes it hard to connect back to the cause. Diluted vinegar was also reasonable advice for waxed floors and older varnishes, where the maintenance model was completely different, and it has been passed down past the point where it still applies. On top of that, vinegar is already sitting in most kitchens, which keeps the advice circulating regardless of whether it still fits a modern polyurethane finish.

Flooring manufacturers are unusually consistent on this. Bona, the largest maker of hardwood floor finishes and cleaners, publishes explicit guidance against water and vinegar. Most flooring warranties list vinegar among the products that void coverage. That is not marketing. Manufacturers do not want warranty claims caused by cleaning.

Vinegar Does Not Remove Scratches

This one comes up constantly and the mechanism does not exist. A scratch is physical damage to the polyurethane film, and in some cases to the wood beneath it. Nothing you wipe on fills it. What vinegar and oil mixtures actually do is temporarily deposit a film of oil that sits in the scratch and makes it less visible for a few days. Then the oil attracts dirt, the scratch goes darker than before, and you have added an oil residue that has to be chemically stripped before the floor can be recoated.

What to Use Instead

  • A pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner, such as Bona, Loba, Rubio, or whatever the flooring manufacturer specifies. This is the whole answer for weekly cleaning.
  • A microfiber flat mop used damp, not wet. The floor should be dry to the touch within a minute of mopping over it.
  • Dry dust mopping, done often. Grit causes more visible damage to hardwood than any cleaner does, so removing it before wet mopping matters more than which cleaner gets used.

The Full Do-Not-Use List

  • Vinegar and any acidic cleaner, including lemon juice
  • Ammonia and general-purpose cleaners containing it
  • Bleach
  • Oil soaps, including the ones marketed specifically for wood, which leave a residue that has to be stripped before recoating
  • Shine restorers and polish, same problem
  • Steam mops, which drive vapor through the finish film
  • Abrasive pads, powders, and scrub brushes
  • Wax on top of polyurethane, which does not bond and turns cloudy

If You Have Been Using Vinegar for Years

You have probably not ruined anything. What you likely have is a finish that is duller and thinner than it should be for its age, and a floor that is closer to needing a recoat than the calendar suggests.

  1. Look at the floor in raking light, from a low window early or late in the day. Dull traffic lanes that read differently from the protected areas under furniture mean the finish is worn in those paths.
  2. Try the water drop test. Put a few drops of water on a traffic lane and leave them for five minutes. If they bead, the finish is intact. If they soak in and darken the wood, the finish is worn through and the floor needs attention before liquids start reaching the wood in earnest.

A floor with a worn but intact finish can usually be screened and recoated, which is a fraction of the cost and disruption of a full sand. A floor where liquid is reaching the wood needs a full refinish. Stopping the vinegar now is what keeps you in the first category.

Diluting Vinegar Slows the Damage, It Does Not Stop It

A heavily diluted solution used occasionally is unlikely to cause visible harm quickly, but dilution changes the timeline, not the outcome. The acid is still there, just in a weaker concentration, and every mopping still etches the finish a little further and pushes a little more liquid into the seams. A one-to-one water ratio used once a month behaves differently than straight vinegar used weekly, but neither offers any advantage over a neutral cleaner that costs about the same and does not carry the risk.

A Homemade Cleaner Still Has to Be pH-Neutral

Most searches for a homemade recipe are really searches for something without vinegar in it, and that instinct is right. A true homemade cleaner is hard to get right because the alternatives people reach for cause their own problems: dish soap leaves a residue film that dulls the finish and has to be stripped before a floor can be recoated, and oil-based mixtures leave a similar film that attracts dirt. A capful of a commercial pH-neutral hardwood cleaner diluted in warm water is, in practice, the closest thing to a simple homemade solution that actually works, since it skips both the acid problem and the residue problem at once.

When Dullness Means the Finish Is Worn
